The Early Designs

The need for snowmobiles has existed for a long time. People would want to travel across difficult terrain, but in the winter the snow made the journey too dangerous or too difficult. Innovative thinkers began putting their skills to the test to devise a way to keep the snow from preventing any travel.

In 1896, the first United States patent for a snow vehicle was issued. Many people define the first snowmobile as the model that appeared in 1909. O.C. Johnson attached tracks and a one lunger engine together, making a vehicle capable of pushing through the snow. Other models began appearing as well, such as Virgil White's converted Model T Ford and J. Arman's motorized wind-driven sleigh.

The foundation for the modern snowmobile can trace its roots to November 22, 1927 when Carl J.E. Eliason received a patent for a motor toboggan. His design involved a wooden toboggan with two skis. Riders could use ropes to steer it and it ran off of a 2.5 horsepower outboard motor. This design was so innovative that it continued to be used until 1960!

Polaris® Industries designed their first practical snowmobile in 1954. Initially, industry leaders were hesitant about the success of such a unique vehicle. But it didn't take long for the company to switch from farm equipment to selling snowmobiles and other companies followed suit.
