History

Polaris Industries got its start after the end of World War II, when a small-time Minnesota farm equipment manufacturer began to develop snowmobiles. This soon led to a high demand for powersports vehicles and the company began to manufacture their first all-terrain vehicles or ATVs in 1985, starting with their famous Trail Boss model. The Trail Boss is considered to be the first American-made ATV, in fact!

Following on the heels of this initial success, the company decided to take a long and hard look at the ATVs available on the marketplace to see how they could improve things. Early ATVs tended to be somewhat clunky to ride, which didn’t make them very enjoyable, so Polaris made sure that their models rolled off assembly lines with improved suspension systems and heightened performance capabilities. Some of the now-standard features that Polaris innovated include full floorboards, four-wheel drive, automatic transmission and independent rear suspension systems.

Thanks to their success, the millionth Sportsman® ATV was sold in 2008. Polaris even signed a production contract with the U.S. Marine Corps in 2016 to produce 144 of their MRZR-D ATVs for field usage.
