Motorcycles as an idea dating back to the late 1800s when Gottlieb Daimler became the first person to attach a combustion engine to a bicycle. These were obviously very different from the models you may be familiar with today, but it was a major step toward where we are now. A number of other inventors quickly followed suit and by the turn of the century, these vehicles were in mass production. Initially, the draw toward motorcycles involved racing them, so the first major advancements had to do with speed, durability, and power. It wasn’t until after the second world war that riders viewed them as a way to create a community, namely between war veterans. Not only that, but their image in popular culture also grew, particularly in America where they became an icon on their own. Motorcycles took a serious leap into the global market when some of today’s biggest Japanese names first started making their own models and overtook many of the Western manufacturers within a decade. Their influence then has led to a wider range of options for you today, namely in that they propelled the practical use of slimmer, sportier bikes and made motorcycles more accessible to the average person. Some of today’s most exciting developments include electric models and continuous performance upgrades.
Today’s models also span a wider range of riding styles and needs. Depending on where you’re going or what your experience level is, you’ll probably want to be looking at certain kinds of motorcycles. For example, cruisers and sportbikes can be a great way to roll through town in style without having to fight an ultra-heavy frame. However, you’ll want something heavier, sturdier, and more comfortable if you plan to travel long distances on your bike. This kind of riding is called touring and you’ll want a touring bike to match. Then again, not all motorcycles are built for paved roads. There are lots of off-road motorcycle options as well. Trail bikes can be a great option if you’re looking for a way to have fun on the weekends without all the bells and whistles. However, if you’re a serious racer, then you’ll probably want to check out some motocross bikes. If you want a bike that can handle both dirt roads and paved roads, then you’ll probably want to check out a dual sport bike.
