History of Polaris®

2018 Polaris® 550 INDY® Snowmobile Sheridan WYPolaris® was a venture started by Edgar Hetteen, his younger brother Allan, and close friend David Johnson. When the company was founded in 1945, metal was scarce due to World War Two. The group worked out of Roseau, Minnesota repairing farm equipment and quickly gained a loyal customer following. The founders were also innovators dreaming of finding a better way to trek through deep snow to get to remote hunting shacks. With this focus in mind, they made a prototype snowmobile in 1955. They wanted to prove the machine was more than a toy, so they planned a 1200-mile journey that cut through rugged Alaska. To showcase the durability and potential of the snowmobile, they hauled 900 pounds of food and equipment. The trip took a surprisingly short 12 days despite the temperatures plummeting to -40 Fahrenheit. Their journey proved the Polaris® snowmobile was a strong contender in the powersports world. Their model saw such success that the company focused entirely on creating snowmobiles for many years. They geared their efforts to strengthen their brand and to innovate their product. Eventually, they expanded out into other markets and products. Today, they run three business divisions for off-road vehicles, motorcycles, and global adjacent markets (which includes defense contracts with the US Marines).
