Getting Ready to Ride

First things first: you can't simply show up at an entrance to Yellowstone with your sled and expect to get in. In order to take an unguided snowmobile tour within Yellowstone National Park, you need to apply for a permit in advance.

There are a limited number of snowmobile permits available, and they are awarded by lottery to a few applicants each year. Permit applications are only available during the month of August, so make sure to plan ahead!

Exploring Yellowstone via Snowmobile

Yellowstone National Park encompasses an area of 3,472 square miles. That's a lot of ground to cover! You will need to plan your ride around a particular area of Yellowstone, and there are a lot of great options to choose from.

The most popular winter destination in Yellowstone is probably the Continental Divide Snowmobile Trail. This is a massive trail system that follows the Wind River Mountain Range, and spans 829 miles from Lander, WY, all the way to West Yellowstone, MT.

There are also some great areas outside the park where you can ride without a permit. West Yellowstone offers many miles of snowmobile trails on national forest service land, and you can explore backcountry trails at the nearby Targhee National Forest.
