Essential Performance Upgrades for Off-Road Vehicles

Sep. 30 2019 Miscellaneous By ___

If you’ve just bought an off-road vehicle, then you’re no doubt excited to take it out and see what it can do as soon as possible. But after a few rides, you may find that the factory-installed features aren’t quite enough for you, so you’ll want to look into aftermarket upgrades to boost the performance of your off-road vehicle. There’s always room for improvement, after all.

Not sure what upgrades we’re talking about? Peak Powersports LLC, located in Sheridan, is your Wyoming off-road vehicle dealer, so we’ve provided the following list of upgrades you may wish to consider for your off-road vehicle.

1. Skid Plates

Off-road vehicles have high ground clearances specifically to get over bumps, dunes, rocks and uneven turf. That doesn’t mean you want to try to hit every single obstacle in your path, though, because you could end up doing some damage to the undercarriage of your vehicle if you aren’t cautious.

One way to help reduce this potential for damage is to install skid plates that will protect the suspension, just in case you do hit something that’s a little too high for your vehicle’s ground clearance. These hard metal plates can take a real beating and they’ll prevent harm from befalling your beloved off-road beast!

2. Specialized Tires

Depending on the type of terrain that you want to travel on, you may want to invest in additional sets of tires. The standard all-terrain tires on your quad are great for general trail riding and off-roading, but certain conditions may require something a bit more specialized.

One of these special terrains is sand, which requires you to have paddle-style tires that can dig through the loose material without causing the vehicle to sink deep into it.

Knobby tires are best for wet and sticky conditions, since they’ll help you get more traction rather than spinning your wheels uselessly. Talk to the staff here at Peak Powersports if you need further recommendations for tires.

3. Air Filtration

Another great way to boost the performance of your off-road vehicle is to find a way to direct more air into the engine. Improving the airflow in your quad will add more power and increase your top speeds, and it’s a pretty inexpensive upgrade to make! Invest in an aftermarket air filter that’s less heavily padded than the stock filters that tend to limit airflow.

If you don’t want to change out the air filter, then you can open up the airbox by adding vents or drilling holes into it. This is a more complex operation, though, and it does increase the risk of water getting into your intake system. Consult a professional to do this properly.

4. Exhaust System

Your exhaust system is going to need to be upgraded to allow it to expel the extra air that you’ll be taking on after implementing better air filtration. You can do this by changing out the entire system or adding a slip-on, or you can reduce the restrictions on your current ATV setup. Make sure that you adjust your exhaust system to handle increased production so that your engine doesn’t backfire. Ask a professional like the staff here at Peak Powersports LLC if you need help in figuring out how best to alter and upgrade your exhaust system.
